Indications/Uses
Tobacco dependence by relieving nicotine craving & w/drawal symptoms facilitating smoking cessation in smokers motivated to quit.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Heavy smoker (≥15 cigarettes in 24-hr period) One 25-mg patch/16 hr daily for 1st 8 wk, then one 15-mg patch/16 hr daily for the next 2 wk & one 10-mg patch/16 hr daily for the final 2 wk. Light smoker (<15 cigarettes in 24-hr period) One 15-mg patch/16 hr daily for 1st 8 wk then one 10-mg patch/16 hr daily for the final 4 wk.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if any symptoms of nicotine excess occur. Recent stroke, MI, unstable angina, cardiac arrhythmia, CABG & angioplasty or uncontrolled HTN. Diabetes; overactive thyroid gland, phaeochromocytoma; stomach ulcer, oesophagitis; history of epilepsy & seizures. Remove patch prior to MRI procedures. Not recommended to use beyond 6 mth. Moderate to severe hepatic &/or severe renal impairment. Pregnancy. Avoid use during lactation. Not to be used in childn & adolescent <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Rash, hives. Dizziness, headache, irritability or aggression, feeling low, anxiety restlessness, poor concentration, increased appetite or wt gain, urge to smoke (craving), sleeplessness or sleep disturbance, low heart rate.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ drugs containing theophylline, tacrine, clozapine, ropinirole, imipramine, olanzapine, clomipramine, fluvoxamine, flecainide, pentazocine.
